Eagle Scout Project
Overview
For my eagle project I repaired and rebuilt two failing trail signs in a local county park, Mills Reservation. This project spanned 3 years from initial planning to finished signage and involved a crew of 15 people to manufacture and assemble the signs.
Design & Planning
- I began planning the project in 2021 after seeing the state of disrepair in two signs in Mills Reservation
- Both signs roofs were failing, the maps were missing or illegible in both signs, & the Old Quarry Road sign had more widespread structural failure and graffiti
- Next, I designed an entire new sign for Old Quarry Road, a new roof for the Normal Ave sign and upgraded maps for both signs
- Along the design process I met with an engineer, who was also an assistant scoutmaster in my troop, to review my designs and ensure they would last for years to come
- Finally, once the design was approved by the county, I setup a gofundme and raised funds to buy the materials for the project
Project Execution
- Over the course of two weekends in 2023 I led a group of 15 volunteers to manufacture and install the signage in the park
- I led the volunteers to:
- Saw wood to the specs in my designs
- Painting signage components
- Lay shingles onto the roofs
- Attach the signs onto the posts
- To accomplish these tasks I taught the volunteers a variety of skills ranging from how to use a drill to how to read engineering drawings
Project Impact
- Immediately after completion of my project park goers began using and appreciating the upgraded signage and maps
- These signs have now served the community for over a year without need for repair or update and will last for years to come
